What is NCAA Football?

If you have any interest in playing or learning about college football whatsoever, you will not be able to indulge in this interest without hearing the term NCAA. The NCAA is an association made up of over a thousand colleges and universities, as well as various sports organizations, which is the most powerful association over all of college football. NCAA stands for the National Collegiate Athletic Association and consists of three divisions that an organization can join under, depending on the number of sports teams they sponsor as well as other factors, such as the gender of the teams. NCAA college football rules and regulations are what is used while playing, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association in charge of determining the champions of play-offs.

While the NCAA college sports are many, NCAA football is probably most famous in the association. NCAA football consists of college football teams and is like the NFL only on a college level. The different divisions host a series of various conferences for teams to compete in. There are also a number of bowls that teams play to try and earn national fame and ranking. There has been controversy over the fact that the NCAA football does not have a championship tournament for Division I FBS. The winners of the BCS, Bowl Championship Series, are not only determined by the games they play, but must also rank first in the final Coaches' Poll. While the Bowl Championship Series is for Division I, the other two Divisions have their own championships.

How does the National Collegiate Athletic Association affect college football today? Football still remains extremely popular, and it was through college football that the sport first gained its popularity. At first, American football was known as Rugby Football. The rules went through various changes over how and when the ball could be picked up from the ground. In the 1800's the sport was more like soccer than what we consider today to be traditional football. As it grew over time, it developed a new set of rules that we now know today as American Football. Walter Camp, who served on the rules and regulations committee for close to fifty years, is famous for changing to rules into the football standards of today, and is known as the "Father of American Football."

Why is college football so popular in the sports world? There are a number of different reasons. First there is the love of the game itself. Typically it is easier to go to a college game than to get tickets to see the professional games, and yet it is more entertaining than watching high school football. The players are talented, they just have not reached professional levels yet. Then there is the atmosphere. People feel a deep bond with their home team and show up to root for them through thick and thin. Schools also offer activities to get the crowd into the spirit of the game. Hardcore football fans also go to check out potential players for the national level. Often a player is judged on his college career to determine whether or not he can succeeded in the NFL.

This is where the NCAA and football truly mesh together. The love of the fans, coaches, players, and universities for football was the reason the NCAA college sports association was founded, and it the core reason it has held together for this long. NCAA football rivals the NFL in popularity today and continues to grow every year. Whether you plan on playing football, or simply watching it, the NCAA is a big part of your interest whether you realize it or not. While you do not need to understand the different divisions and play-offs, you do need to understand that the NCAA stands for the rules and regulations of college football. Many players may go on to be professionals in the NFL, but they get their start in college football. Some would say it is the backbone of American society, and all that football stands for.
